Rivenhall Airfield
I was interested to read about the airfield where my father was in WWII. He flew a Stirling in Operation Market Garden and although he is 86 still has vivid memories of those times. He will be interested to read the story by Bruce Stait. Thank you. |

Greetings from Ipswich,Australia. I have been researching my grandmothers family and have found this site to be very useful. I have gone back as far as John Aylett born 1741 died 1778,married sarah in 1769. He had a sister Ester? born 1745. Their parents were Richard Aylett and Mary. Richards siblings were as far as known , Elizabeth who died 1697 and George (no dates) who married a Mary(their eldest child Hugh was born 1693) Could Richards wife ,Mary have been Mary Bancroft? Could I get help (certificates etc) proving the connection? If so please contact me. Francis Kelly |

Robert DOWDY married Elizabeth CROZIER in Rivenhall on October 11th 1793. I am interested in these people as the name DOWDY soon became DAWDRY as they moved to Kelveden and then into Suffolk. I would love to hear from anyone with interest and/or information about these people.

Tunbridge family (Fredrick John Tunbridge and Emily Sara Smee) left Rivenhall around 1904 to live in Mission, British Columbia, Canada. I am Cecil Tunbridge's grandaughter and our family has owned and lived on the original homestead in Mission for over 100 years. We have just won the Ministry of Agriculture Century Farm Award 2008. I am looking for any information about the Tunbridge family from Rivenhall, Braintree, Essex. I welcome your questions regarding our historic property here in Mission and will volunteer information and resources for those wishing to learn more about Mission, British Columbia, Canada. info@tunbridgefarm.ca |

Hi,
My mother and father were married at Rivenhall and my Nanna Cheek, Auntie May and Uncle Patrick are buried there.
I live in Wendell, North Carolina. My daughter, Morgan, made a model of Rivenhall Church for her 7th grade art project. Even to the stain glass window. It is wonderful. She has a passion for the arts.
I have taken pictures and would like to send them (once developed - still the "old fashion" way of taking pics) LOL
The model will be on display at her school on 3/11 and then at the local library in a contest from 3/17 thru 4/14. I will let you know how things go.
Thank you so much for taking care of my family.
Always, Shaile Gahagan Hester
NOTE: I still have family in Silver End (uncle, cousins). Hope to (one day) get over. |

Humphrey family - Sniveller's Lane Railway Cottage circa 1830's to 1900's. I'm trying to trace my family and have got back to William Humphrey being born in Rivenhall in circa 1837. They show up on the censuses for 1841 - 1901 as being at the above address and were employed as 'platelayers' and gatekeepers' on the Victorian railway which ran near to Kelvedon. We visited the area last year but couldn't identify the railway cottage so preseme it's long gone. Does anyone have any information about this family? I know my next step is to visit the Records Office at Chelmsford to view the Parish Records but thought someone with local history knowledge might be able to throw some further light either on the cottage or the humphrey family?
Thank you |

His 3 X great grandfather was Thomas AGER who is mentioned in the parish registers; he was born in 1818 and I believe is buried in Rivenhall. | I was delighted to find your web site and particularly the histories of some of the Beckwith family. I was quite moved by the extract from the sad letter from the Rev. Bradford Hawkins to Joseph and Rebecca Beckwith (nee Davey) recounting the death of Rebecca's mother and father as Joseph and Rebecca were my great great great grandparents who migrated to Australia in 1856 following their son William who migrated four years earlier. Both Joseph and William are also mentioned in other extracts written by David Nash and a number of their direct descendants (including me) still live in Australia particularly in Melbourne, Victoria. I would be interested to have contact with anyone who could fill in some of the early gaps in the histories of the Beckwith, Davey and Fryatt families who all intermarried at some points. |

Discovered the Rivenhall site whilst researching my family history.
My Grandmothers maiden name was Holliday and they lived at the thatched cottage which appears identical to the one at the top of this page, next to the school!....
My father and one of his brothers used to regularly visit Rivenhall for holidays as a child, travelling on a 'free' ticket on the railway as my Grandad was a railwayman.
I have found the site very interesting and it helped a great deal with the Census Returns for the family.
My next step appears to be Wiltshire where my Grandmother's mother came from.
I hope to visit Rivenhall sometime in the future, meanwhile I shall use this site as 'the next best thing'
Best wishes

found you by accident as with lots of the best things. I am Southend born, but my maternal Challis ancestors came from Rivenhall and Faulkborne. John Challis who married Elizabeth Pilley in 1757 at Rivenhall being the farthest I have got back so far. James 1805 - 1884 married Mary Cornwell ( My 5 x g. grandparents) he was shown as a gardener and Sexton at the church at the time of his daughter's marriage.
I paid a lovely visit to Rivenhall and Faulkborne three years ago and found both delightful.

I have no problem visiting Rivenhall for research -- in the 250 years since my family first began farming in Rivenhall we have only migrated as far as Bradford Street in Braintree!

Its a couple of years since I last wrote a message and also wrote an article for the site.
I am writing now to let you know that I have recently re-vamped all my web sites and now have a .com www.maximiliangenaelogy.com , to be precise, which is the new home for all my genealogy projects.
Over the last 2 years I have found several new cousins and 100's of visitors who have either found me via Rivenhall 2002 or indeed have found this site from my own. In all cases the feedback has been positive and many find the historic and family orientated nature of our sites a pleasant journey into the past and present.
If you have a chance do re-visit my new home. I have recently had a guestbook entry from the new owners of the Orangery at Felix Hall and also contact from the trustee of a National Trust estate once owned by William Hanbury and Sarah Western, she being the daughter of William Western and Anne Bateman, as documented on my site as well as here - see "A SHORT HISTORY OF THE WESTERN FAMILY" http://www.rivenhall.org.uk/default.asp?pg=history+of+the+western+family
Well I may have more news this coming year if these 2 new contacts provide some new interesting facts. I must try and not leave it for two years before writing again. Best regards to all Peter Western |

Thank you for a most enjoyable site. The pictures are superb and bring back many happy memories. We moved to Silver End in 1967 and attended St Francis until 1973 when my family moved to Bedford. I was confirmed in the parish church on November 30 1969. To this day I remember the good times we had at Midnight Mass - the tree lit with candles and the wonderful services David used to take. In 1976 I got married in Bedford but we had the best vicar as David came to take the service(His wedding present to me). I still keep in contact with him to this day! He has seen me through some very sad moments in my life but always manages to say the right things. If anyone in either village can remember my mother Nina who took Brownies and Guides in Silver End and with whom I attended the Whist Drives on a Friday night in the village hall (sadly she died in 1984)my father Peter,my brother Ian or myself I would love to here from them.

He has many memories of being in Rivenhall, all of them pleasant. I have never been to this area and I am looking forward to seeing it as well. I live in a town probably as old as Rivenhall, and we have a 12th century church of St Mary's which has crusader crosses etched in the church wall. We are also mentioned in the Domesday book. It is Chessington in Surrey. I look forward to hearing from anyone who knows about the American airforce personnel who were stationed in your town.

Hello, I am Peter Western descended from the Senior Line of "Westerns", I have visited Rivenhall and locality several times in recent years. The last time was October 1999. I am glad to see that the renovations to the church appear to have been completed. When I was last there, it was surrounded by scaffolding.
Here are a few relationship details so you can see how I am related to the Western's of Rivenhall.
Thomas Burch WESTERN Sir/1st Baronet and Peter Leslie Patrick WESTERN are 1st cousins 5 times removed. Their common ancestors are Thomas WESTERN and Jane CALVERT.
Charles Callis WESTERN Lord and Baron and Peter Leslie Patrick WESTERN are 4th cousins 5 times removed. Their common ancestors are Thomas WESTERN and Martha GOTT Madam.
Thomas WESTERN (Built vault at Rivenhall Church to hold 6 persons.Buried 17 Jan 1707 - Rivenhall Church "Western Vault") is the 8th great grandfather of Peter Leslie Patrick WESTERN.
I have a web site on Genealogy, a great part of which is devoted to the "Western's, Rivenhall. Felix Hall etc". A permanent link can be found on this site ubder "Village History" www.peterwestern.f9.co.uk\Rivenhall\rivenhall.html
Now that there is a local site for Rivenhall I hope and expect that I will have further contributions to make in the future. By for now, Peter Western |

My wifes ancestor, Thomas Smith/Smyth, was born in Rivenhall in 1524. He later moved to Blackmore. If I may make one comment it would be that it does take quite some time to navigate thru the entire site. Maybe because the photos appear on each and every page.
